About Ariema
A comprehensive approach across the entire hydrogen value chain
We are the pioneering green hydrogen company in Spain. We manufacture the technology, design the strategy and train the talent.
We are a team passionate about hydrogen, with more than two decades of experience driving its development, long before hydrogen became a major industry focus.
Our group operates through two divisions, combining consulting and training services on the one hand, and the industrial development of alkaline electrolysers featuring our proprietary stack technology on the other. This dual approach gives us a comprehensive perspective of the hydrogen value chain, combining the dissemination of our expertise and advisory services with technological and industrial development.
Our Contribution to Energy Sovereignty
At ARIEMA, we understand that the energy transition is not only about changing the source of our energy, but also about deciding who controls the technology that generates it. Spain has a historic opportunity to produce renewable hydrogen and ensure that this leadership is accompanied by industrial and energy sovereignty.
Why Are We Committed to Spanish-Made Hydrogen?
- As an alternative to dependence on foreign markets, we develop electrolysers featuring our own technology and maintain a firm commitment to Spanish industry: 70% of our suppliers are Spanish companies, helping to ensure that the added value and the creation of 400 direct jobs at our Huelva plant remain “at home”.
- Our electrolyser factory represents a milestone involving an investment of €35 million, supported by more than €19 million in funding from MITECO, with an annual production capacity of 200 MW.
- We understand that the electrolyser is the main CAPEX component in renewable hydrogen projects. By manufacturing in Spain, we reduce logistical risks, minimise costs and ensure that the added value remains within our country.
"Spain must encourage support for investment in manufacturing facilities in order to compete on equal terms with neighbouring countries. We want to become a leading supplier for renewable hydrogen projects in Spain and help drive the energy autonomy of Spain and Europe." — Rafael Luque, CEO of ARIEMA.
Mission
To be a leader in the development and commercialisation of entirely Spanish technology, supporting our clients throughout their projects from the earliest stages, while actively contributing to social well-being, sustainable development and value creation for our stakeholders.

A Pioneering Journey
2002
ARIEMA Energía y Medioambiente S.L. (Madrid) is founded as a spin-off from the Spanish National Institute for Aerospace Technology (INTA). It is awarded the Innovative SME Seal by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
2005
Agreement with Plug Power to become its exclusive distributor in Spain, becoming the largest installer of its fuel cells in Europe.
2006
ARIEMA Electrolysers is founded, becoming the first Spanish company to develop alkaline electrolysers featuring its own proprietary stack technology.
2009
Strategic milestone: ARIEMA acquires a 25% stake in Italian electrolyser manufacturer H2Nitidor and begins developing its technology.
2020
ARIEMA takes on the Technical Secretariat of the Hydrogen TCP of the International Energy Agency (IEA).
2021
Development of a large-scale alkaline electrolysis cell (0.5 MW) powered by offshore wind and solar energy. Development of the Ocean H2 project.
2023
New strategic partners join to finance the company’s growth: Grupo Alsa and Renta 4.
2025
ARIEMA receives funding from the Renoval programme to manufacture alkaline electrolysers with an annual production capacity of 200 MW. The programme is managed by IDAE and funded through European funds under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – NextGenerationEU and Andalucía TRADE.

Hydrogen Investments
We advise the world’s first hydrogen investment fund, Renta 4 Megatendencias Ariema Hidrógeno y Energías Sostenibles FI. Available from just €10 through Renta 4 Bank, the fund has been active since February 2020 and achieved a return of 121% in its first year.
As stated in the Prospectus, this fund invests in companies with proprietary technology offering sustainable energy products and services, particularly in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, as well as equipment and component manufacturers, specialist engineering firms, integrators and providers of related technology-based services that contribute to greater sustainability in energy production, storage and use.
The companies in which the fund invests include fuel cell manufacturers (such as Canada-based Ballard and US-based Bloom), manufacturers of electrolysers for hydrogen production (such as Norway-based NEL), and specialists in niche applications (such as Plug Power, which specialises in hydrogen-powered forklifts).
The portfolio also includes companies with strong sustainable energy technologies (such as China-based Jinko Solar), as well as companies that, despite being better known for other areas of activity, are prominent players in this field. Examples include Panasonic, which supplies batteries to Tesla while also manufacturing thousands of fuel cells, and 3M, which manufactures fuel cell components.
Equity exposure will be at least 75%. Details of the investments, legal documentation, performance charts and other information are available on the Renta 4 Banco website at the following link.
