ARIEMA Will Develop a Scalable 0.5 MW Electrolyser as Part of the VALORH2 Project
Last December, the final resolution of the latest Science and Innovation Missions 2022 call was published. The programme was promoted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and managed by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), with European funds managed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Ariema is participating in a consortium with other companies in the “VALORH2” project, one of the Research and Development projects approved under the call, entitled Research into New Technologies, Materials and Processes Associated with the Hydrogen Value Chain.
The project is expected to run for 28 months and has an approved total budget of €7,272,830 (with more than 40% allocated to SMEs). Ariema has been awarded €1,759,285.00, of which €1,404,122.36 is in the form of a grant.
ARIEMA's involvement in the project
Thanks to our years of experience as a pioneering Spanish company in the manufacture of electrolysers using our own technology, at Ariema we are contributing to the project through the design and manufacture of a 0.5 MW alkaline electrolyser that can be scaled up to higher power ratings.
Its development will enable research into new materials, catalysts and components, under purity conditions suitable for potential use in fuel cell vehicles.
About VALORH2
Ariema is part of the consortium of 7 companies involved in the “VALOR H2” project – 3 of which are SMEs: Hiperbaric, Ariema, Aciturri, MTorres, Desmasa, DGH and Adisseo.
These companies contribute expertise in different technological areas, including project leadership, compression and cooling, alkaline electrolysis, storage and transport, refuelling, digitalisation and cybersecurity, and catalytic hydrogenation, respectively.
The project focuses on researching hydrogen-related technologies and processes in four main areas: scalable and cost- and energy-efficient alkaline electrolysis; solutions for the transport and distribution of high-pressure compressed hydrogen; hydrogen compression and dispensing technologies for high-capacity hydrogen refuelling stations; and methanation through the catalytic hydrogenation of recovered CO2.
About Science and Innovation Missions
This initiative focuses on developing and promoting business R&D&I to strengthen the country's economic and industrial fabric. The Ministry has allocated funding to support collaborative business R&D projects aimed at conducting research to address cross-cutting and strategic challenges facing Spanish society, while achieving advances in knowledge and technology to increase the competitiveness of Spanish companies and promote public-private cooperation.
Future developments
Several significant innovations are expected to be developed by the end of the project. The team has also identified several high-value outcomes that will play a key role in the development of hydrogen and the decarbonisation of the economy. Examples include modular and scalable alkaline electrolysis technology, high-pressure hydrogen compression technology capable of supplying high flow rates thanks to its efficiency, and lighter, stronger mobile tanks with a lower environmental impact for the transport, storage and dispensing of high-pressure hydrogen, among others.
At Ariema, we are proud to continue contributing to the decarbonisation of the planet through the ongoing development of our own technology, adopting an innovative and forward-looking approach with the aim of producing clean energy.
