ARIEMA’s 5th Hydrogen Industry Meeting (PMH2) strengthens its commitment to green hydrogen in Spain
Madrid, 10 October 2024 -.On 8 October, the Meliá Castilla Hotel in Madrid became the epicentre of debate and innovation surrounding green hydrogen with the fifth edition of the Hydrogen Industry Meeting (PMH2). More than 330 attendees, 35 exhibitors and 90 speakers took part in an event distinguished by its technical focus and its ability to bring together the leading players in Spain's hydrogen sector.
The event, organised by ARIEMA as a platform to foster synergies within Spain's hydrogen industry, addressed a wide range of strategic issues relating to the deployment of hydrogen in the country. Activities included specialist presentations, round-table discussions and B2B meetings showcasing technological advances, financing strategies and the regulatory challenges facing the sector.
Production, regulation and financing: key pillars of the debate
Green hydrogen production emerged as one of the central themes of the event. Advances in high-efficiency electrolysers were presented alongside strategic projects such as the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, which aims to position Spain as a European leader in this field. At the same time, the development of storage and transport infrastructure emerged as a key technical challenge in ensuring the viability and scalability of renewable hydrogen.
Regulation and certification were another major area of interest. Experts highlighted the need to simplify administrative procedures and harmonise regulations at European level, both of which are essential conditions for attracting investment and facilitating project implementation. From an economic perspective, the importance of public incentives and European funding programmes in closing the cost gap between green hydrogen and fossil-fuel alternatives was also highlighted.
Technological innovation, hydrogen derivatives and applications
Research and development also featured prominently on the programme of the fifth edition of PMH2. During the event, participating organisations presented innovations in advanced materials, electrolysis technologies and control systems that improve operational efficiency and safety at hydrogen plants. In addition, various organisations addressed hydrogen derivatives and their use in applications such as ammonia, renewable methane and fertilisers, opening up new opportunities in the circular economy and industrial decarbonisation.
Hydrogen as a solution for sustainable mobility was another central topic. Sessions dedicated to this field examined the challenges associated with the lack of refuelling infrastructure and high initial costs, while also highlighting its potential to transform transport, particularly urban fleets and heavy-duty vehicles.
Off-takers: a key element in market development
In the context of the 5th Hydrogen Industry Meeting 2024, off-takers (end consumers) were identified as a fundamental element in ensuring the economic viability and success of green hydrogen projects. During the various conferences held as part of the event, participating organisations highlighted that the lack of robust agreements with end consumers of hydrogen can hinder the progress of projects under development and discourage those at the FiD stage. The need for customer retention strategies and long-term partnerships to foster and strengthen the emerging hydrogen market was therefore emphasised. Attention was also drawn to the role that public policies and support mechanisms play in encouraging off-taker commitment during the early stages of market development. PMH2 presentations have become an established forum for sharing developments, analysing trends and fostering new collaborations within the hydrogen sector.
Networking and strategic conclusions from the 5th Hydrogen Industry Meeting
The event format provided an ideal environment for networking and collaboration between companies. B2B meetings and round-table discussions facilitated the exchange of experiences and the identification of strategic opportunities, consolidating PMH2 as an essential annual event for professionals in the sector.
The Meeting concluded with a clear consensus: green hydrogen is a key component of the energy transition, but its success depends on technological innovation, appropriate regulation, public-private cooperation and the consolidation of a stable market. Spain has the potential to become a significant player in this field in Europe, but greater coordination between the parties involved is required.
With growing participation and highly technical content, the 5th PMH2 has reaffirmed its role as a key forum for fostering collaboration, networking and knowledge-sharing within Spain's hydrogen sector, contributing to the creation of a hydrogen-based industrial ecosystem. At the next edition, scheduled for autumn 2025, ARIEMA aims to continue strengthening these dynamics, which are essential for the development of green hydrogen in Spain.
