DEUTZ and ARIEMA inaugurate an innovative hydrogen technology testing centre in Zafra
- Power to Deutz is a pilot project integrating a 0.5 MW ARIEMA electrolyser and the 150 kW DEUTZ TCG 7.8 H2 engine, designed to operate on 100% hydrogen.
- The aim of the project is to validate the operational and technical feasibility of the systems, demonstrating their efficiency and stability in continuous energy production.
26 February 2025 –. ARIEMA and DEUTZ today unveiled their new joint initiative in the field of hydrogen technologies, “Power to Deutz”, in Zafra, Badajoz. The two organisations have inaugurated a full-scale testing site where they will study and improve their respective technologies using two prototypes: in the first phase, ARIEMA will operate a 500 kW alkaline electrolyser prototype, while DEUTZ will commission a 150 kW generator set based on its new DEUTZ TCG 7.8 H2 stationary engine design, developed to operate on 100% hydrogen.
Green hydrogen for industrial applications
As part of the “Taking Responsibility” sustainability strategy, ARIEMA and DEUTZ have developed a pioneering project integrating green hydrogen into industrial processes. The pilot plant will use a 0.5 MW alkaline electrolyser, designed and manufactured by ARIEMA, to generate hydrogen from photovoltaic solar energy. This hydrogen will power the DEUTZ TCG 7.8 H2 engine, installed in a 150 kW generator developed by AEM. The electrolyser prototype was developed by ARIEMA as part of the SMS: Verde project, co-funded through CDTI's 2021 Sustainable Automotive Technology Programme. Following the completion of this project, the prototype is entering a new testing and improvement phase that will contribute to ARIEMA's new designs. The main objective of “Power to Deutz” is to validate the operational and technical feasibility of the different systems, as well as their integration, demonstrating their efficiency and stability in continuous energy production. In addition, the project aims to optimise hydrogen storage and management, ensuring its availability and a stable supply. The initiative is supported by the Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre (CIIAE) and FUNDECYT-PCTEX. “This project reinforces our commitment to innovation and sustainability, demonstrating the potential of green hydrogen in industrial applications. Furthermore, this electrolyser is the first alkaline electrolyser featuring 100% Spanish technology to be tested in a real industrial environment,” says Rafael Luque, CEO of ARIEMA.
