  • The project forms part of the DEUTZ Group's DUAL+ strategy for the development of new environmentally friendly technologies
  • The plant will produce renewable energy based on green hydrogen using an electrolyser from ARIEMA, which will make use of surplus production from the expanded plant supplying renewable energy to DEUTZ Spain
  • The AEM (Alternativas Energéticas de Murcia - Spain) generator set is powered by the new DEUTZ TCG 7.8 H2 internal combustion engine

5 March 2024 – Madrid - DEUTZ Spain, ARIEMA and AEM (Alternativas Energéticas Murcia - Spain) have signed a collaboration agreement enabling the installation of a new renewable energy production pilot plant that will use sustainably produced green hydrogen as its sole fuel at the German company's component manufacturing facility in Zafra (Extremadura).

With this new energy plant, the DEUTZ Group is demonstrating the efficient use of green hydrogen as an energy storage carrier for surplus production from renewable energy systems, such as solar photovoltaic plants or wind farms. It therefore represents an important and innovative step towards ecosystem-based solutions within DEUTZ's “Taking Responsibility” sustainability strategy. DEUTZ is committed to the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact and has prioritised 8 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the UN aims to achieve worldwide. This project demonstrates that cooperation between the different companies involved in managing the hydrogen value chain is key to its success. It will also benefit from research support provided by the new CIIAE (Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre) through cooperation with FUNDECYT-PCTEX.

The pilot plant will be built on land currently available next to the component production plant at DEUTZ's facilities. In the first phase, a state-of-the-art alkaline electrolyser from the ARIEMA Group will be installed. It has a production capacity of 0.5 MW and will enable green hydrogen (100% sustainable) to be produced through electrolysis for subsequent compression and storage. The hydrogen produced will be used as fuel in a new 150 kW generator designed by AEM (Alternativas Energéticas de Murcia), a pioneering company in the development of low-emission generator sets. The generator will be equipped with the new six-cylinder TCG 7.8 H2 engine, which the DEUTZ Group will launch at the end of 2024.

The energy required to produce and compress the hydrogen will mainly come from surplus energy available from the solar photovoltaic plant already planned for 2024. DEUTZ uses this solar energy in its production process and, with this new plant, will be able to continue making use of green energy at times when there is surplus photovoltaic production.

Isidoro De la Flor, Commercial Director of DEUTZ Spain, stated that “Spain has made a strong commitment to the use of hydrogen as a key energy carrier for decarbonisation, and DEUTZ is contributing within the framework of our DUAL+ strategy with highly innovative products that offer comprehensive solutions for new energy production and mobility systems in the industrial sector”.

Desirée Bragado, “Green Manager” at the Zafra production plant, also highlighted that ”Our pilot plant offers a pioneering, high-value solution for demonstrating the advantages of using hydrogen efficiently as an essential element in achieving sustainable development goals in current and future production processes”. She also stated that “DEUTZ is a company celebrating 160 years of history this year and, despite this, it retains the same innovative spirit that enables it to offer sustainable solutions that continue to move the world”.

Juan Gomez Valero and Enrique Girón, Commercial Director and Managing Director of ARIEMA, respectively, highlighted:

“This collaboration confirms the roadmap established by ARIEMA to design, manufacture, test and market a new family of “MW-scale” alkaline electrolysers based on its proprietary 0.5 MW stack technology. For ARIEMA, cooperation with DEUTZ, AEM and CIIAE/Fundecyt represents an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our electrolysis technology in a real production environment alongside leading industrial partners”.

Nicasio Mateo, Managing Director of AEM Spain, stated: “Energy production using hydrogen as a fuel is now beginning to take off, establishing itself as a fundamental element in the transition towards achieving sustainability in the future."

"In this project we are embarking on, energy will be generated from green hydrogen, which will be obtained from the surplus electricity produced by a photovoltaic plant, although it could be produced using any other type of green energy."

"DEUTZ Spain invited AEM to participate in this project after we had worked together on several developments for the brand. From the outset, we saw it as a challenge for our design and production systems and, of course, we said yes, that we were willing to work with them on developing the generator set included within the project."

"At AEM Spain, we would like to express our sincere thanks to DEUTZ Spain for choosing us to participate in this exciting project, which we consider to be pioneering in the European market”.
