The IDOM-ARIEMA consortium will lead european efforts on hydrogen safety
IDOM and ARIEMA, both with decades of experience, will provide technical coordination and administrative excellence to strengthen the culture of hydrogen safety across the European Union.
Madrid, 23 January 2025 -.The Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (CHJU) has awarded the IDOM-ARIEMA Consortium a framework contract for the creation, organisation, management and coordination of the European Hydrogen Safety Panel (EHSP), a key initiative aimed at ensuring and promoting the safe adoption of hydrogen technologies across Europe.
The CHJU launched the European Hydrogen Safety Panel in 2017 to support the development and deployment of inherently safer hydrogen systems and infrastructure, contributing towards the following vision: “Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies will be developed safely, introduced safely and used safely in both projects and society as a whole.” With the new hydrogen targets established by the European Union from 2020 onwards, the EHSP has become a key platform for providing specialist guidance and promoting a culture of hydrogen safety across the EU.
Building on a legacy of excellence in safety
The EHSP's mission is as follows:
To assist the CHJU, at both project and programme level, in ensuring that hydrogen safety is properly addressed and managed.
To promote and disseminate a high-level hydrogen safety culture within the CHJU programme and beyond.
Historically, the EHSP has consisted of a multidisciplinary group of experts organised into specialised ad hoc working groups according to the tasks to be carried out and their areas of expertise. The EHSP provides the CHJU with unique, practical and direct access to leading expert advice on all hydrogen safety-related matters. It enhances the transfer of safety knowledge beyond individual project boundaries and establishes consistent communication on safety outcomes.
Scope of the framework contract
Under this new contract, the IDOM-ARIEMA Consortium will provide a wide range of services that will build on this foundation to further enhance the impact of the EHSP.
Key activities include:
Continuing to provide support at programme and project level, ensuring that EU-funded projects incorporate the most advanced hydrogen safety practices and identifying existing gaps.
Expanding the Hydrogen Incidents and Accidents Database (HIAD 3.0).
Developing training materials and coordinating workshops to improve safety skills among all stakeholders.
Enhancing public outreach through the creation of a dedicated website that will serve as a hydrogen safety knowledge hub, featuring interactive tools, frequently asked questions and resources for different audiences.
About the IDOM-ARIEMA Consortium
With decades of experience in the hydrogen sector and in managing complex, multidisciplinary projects for multilateral organisations, IDOM and ARIEMA will combine their strengths in technical coordination, administrative excellence and financial management. Together, they will ensure that the EHSP operates effectively and achieves its strategic objectives.
