Matteco and ARIEMA receive funding from the hydrogen PERTE to deploy next-Generation technology in more efficient electrolysers
Valencia/Huelva, 3 July 2024 - Matteco, a materials technology company developing new solutions to decarbonise the economy, will incorporate its components into a new generation of alkaline electrolysers from Ariema Enerxía, a pioneering Spanish manufacturer, enabling green hydrogen to be produced more efficiently and at a lower cost.
The EMMA project (Enhanced Matteco-Ariema Electrodes), resulting from the collaboration between the two companies, has been awarded €1.1 million in funding from the Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage PERTE (ERHA) of the Ministry of Industry, under incentive programme 4, which aims to promote advanced solutions and key enabling technologies for the production of renewable hydrogen through water electrolysis, a crucial stage in the value chain.
The project's total budget, including the partners' own funds, will amount to €1.4 million. The joint work will focus on developing and incorporating Matteco's high-performance components, a leader in catalysts and electrodes for alkaline and AEM electrolysis, into a new generation of more durable and cost-effective alkaline electrolysers capable of producing green hydrogen at a competitive cost.
Innovation to improve efficiency
The collaboration with Ariema will make it possible to study and consolidate the capabilities of the new electrode developments over a three-year period, both at intermediate cell sizes (25 cm in diameter) and at the final sizes required by the green industry (1 m in diameter). Reducing the costs associated with green hydrogen production is the key driver for deploying this energy carrier in sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry, long-distance transport and the storage of surplus energy.
This implementation will also enable surplus energy generated during periods of high hydrogen production to be converted more efficiently, helping to stabilise the electricity grid and ensure a constant supply of renewable energy.
Iker Marcaide, co-founder and CEO of Matteco: "Our work with Ariema, a leading manufacturer, demonstrates that Matteco's nanotechnology is accelerating the arrival of a new generation of alkaline electrolysers, in which our components are key to their performance and efficiency. This latest step forward strengthens the company's position ahead of the opening of our gigawatt-scale factory in Valencia”.
Rafael Luque, CEO of Ariema: “We have high expectations for the technology developed by Matteco, a trusted partner, which will enable us to make progress towards our goal of offering more efficient alkaline electrolysers at increasingly larger scales, consolidating Ariema's position as a leading company in the field of alkaline electrolysis, where Ariema is the first Spanish company with its own proprietary technology”.
The EMMA project is aligned with the objectives of the European Union's Hydrogen Strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, which aims to reach up to 40 GW of renewable green hydrogen electrolysers by 2030. It also contributes towards the targets set by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) for alkaline electrolysis in 2026.
ABOUT MATTECO
Matteco is a materials technology company whose mission is to decarbonise the economy and accelerate the energy transition, starting with solutions for green hydrogen production. The company develops high-performance catalysts and electrodes, key components in the process of generating renewable hydrogen through alkaline and AEM electrolysis. This patented technology, the result of more than 10 years of R&D, transforms the economics of green hydrogen production by reducing both capital expenditure on equipment and operating costs. Matteco is a spin-off from the University of Valencia and forms part of Zubi Labs, the impact company builder of Zubi Group. Based in Valencia (Spain), it is currently expanding its manufacturing capacity to reach GW scale in 2024.

ABOUT ARIEMA
ARIEMA is a Spanish technology company specialising in green hydrogen. Founded in 2002, it is the longest-established company in this sector in Spain and the first to develop its own alkaline electrolysis technology. In recent years, it has channelled its electrolyser development activities through its subsidiary Ariema Enerxía S.L., the company participating in the EMMA Project. ARIEMA stands out for its capabilities in electrolyser design and manufacturing and has extensive experience in hydrogen projects financed through both national and international public funding. Thanks to its continuous investment in R&D&I, ARIEMA is improving and increasing the size of its proprietary electrolysers. In addition to its electrolyser activities, ARIEMA offers a wide range of services, including specialised strategic and technical consultancy and client support, as well as assistance with publicly funded projects. Its experience and knowledge of the sector enable it to provide expert advice for the development of hydrogen-related projects.
Drawing on its first-hand experience in the sector, ARIEMA offers specialised hydrogen training through a comprehensive online course at cursoh2.com, as well as bespoke training programmes tailored to clients' needs and delivered by industry professionals.
